Dongfang Meiren ("'Oriental Beauty"), also known as Bai Hao (“White Tip”), Five Colour or Champagne Oolong, is a famous Taiwanese heavily fermented, non-roasted, tip-type oolong.
Produced from the Qing Xin cultivar in Miaoli in North Western Taiwan , our Oriental Beauty has wonderful and unique fruity aromas and sweet tasting bright reddish-orange tea liquor, without bitterness, that is due to the oxidation of the leaf beginning in the tea garden due to the attack of a particular insect (Jacobiasca formosana) that feeds on the stems, leaf and buds. Once seen as a problem, these leaf hoppers are now encouraged by organic methods of cultivation in generally warmer and lower altitude areas (300–800m) to produce this beautiful and distinct tea.
Harvested from young leaves and tips in the summer, Oriental Beauty is heavily oxidized (around 70%), approaching the level of black tea, with a long withering that also helps to encourage its’ sweetness.
Oriental Beauty is best steeped at lower temperatures (80°C–85°C) than is typical for other (more tightly rolled) oolongs for 1–2 minutes for the first pot and then longer for subsequent (and multiple) steeps.

About The Tea Catcher
1997-2001 The Tea Catcher lived, travelled, worked and studied in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Italy and the Czech Republic. During this time he drank much tea and visited tea growing regions.
2001-2009 Was spent mostly in Europe working with fine foods and olive oils in Italy, wine in Switzerland and tea in Prague. It was here in the cold winter months that The Tea Catcher passion was ignited. Much time was spent in the many tea rooms found all over the Czech Rep., drinking, learning and assisting, and also with Tea Mountain(.cz) as his business began and grew.
2010-today on return to Australia, The Tea Catcher seed, planted years ago, began its’ growth, leading to the purveyor of “the finest teas and accoutrements, sourced worldwide” that you see today. New teas, pots etc are constantly being chased, studied, sampled and ordered to bring the freshest, best and most interesting to you as soon as possible. Watch this space…..!
…and enjoy…!
