
Hōjicha (焙じ茶, ほうじ茶) is a Japanese green tea. It is distinctive from other Japanese green teas because it is roasted in a porcelain pot over charcoal. It is roasted at 150 °C (302 °F) to prevent oxidation and produce a light golden colour, as opposed to other Japanese teas which are steamed. In general, the base of a hojicha consists of leaves from the second harvest or after.
The light brown leaves have the aroma of freshly baked bread (rye?!?) and steeps to a light brown liquor with a typically soft, roasted, sweet caramel. Due to the roasting Hojicha is very low in caffeine and suitable for evening slurps and children.
Our Hojichacha comes from a traditional Kyoto tea store, established in 1803.
Cultivars - mixed and blended.
Preparation- use approximately 2g of leaf per 100ml and steep for 2-4 mins at 90-95° according to taste. A second steep is possible with slightly cooler water and a shortened first steep.
N.B. NOW AVAILABLE HOJICHA POWDER- low caffeine, fairly strongly roasted, green tea powder. A wonderful alternative to coffee when you don't need the "buzz", this super-fine powder works also well in lattes or baking. try some soon...!!!

About The Tea Catcher
1997-2001 The Tea Catcher lived, travelled, worked and studied in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Italy and the Czech Republic. During this time he drank much tea and visited tea growing regions.
2001-2009 Was spent mostly in Europe working with fine foods and olive oils in Italy, wine in Switzerland and tea in Prague. It was here in the cold winter months that The Tea Catcher passion was ignited. Much time was spent in the many tea rooms found all over the Czech Rep., drinking, learning and assisting, and also with Tea Mountain(.cz) as his business began and grew.
2010-today on return to Australia, The Tea Catcher seed, planted years ago, began its’ growth, leading to the purveyor of “the finest teas and accoutrements, sourced worldwide” that you see today. New teas, pots etc are constantly being chased, studied, sampled and ordered to bring the freshest, best and most interesting to you as soon as possible. Watch this space…..!
